• History of Back Door

  • 1948

Walmsley's Bakery opens its doors at 5 Post Office Square, becoming a cornerstone in Oak Bluffs.

  • 1971

The White family acquires the bakery, renaming it Old Stone.
Peter White initiates the "Back-Door" sales tradition. No set hours -if you craved a donut at 4 am, Peter and his team were there to oblige.

  • 2001

Rita Brown and Janice Casey take ownership, rebranding as Martha's Vineyard Gourmet Cafe & Bakery. The tradition of overnight baking continues, attracting crowds sometimes in the hundreds.

  • 2018

After 17 years at the helm, Jan and Rita pass the torch to local investors. The original recipes and bake staff remain, ensuring the Back Door tradition thrives.

Back Door Donuts lives on, happily serving our #FritterFam in Oak Bluffs, and now in Boston. Cheers to fritters, donuts, and traditions!
